The things that really matter

"It is difficult to know what counts in the world. Most of us count credits, honor, dollars. But at the bulging center of mid-life, I am beginning to see that the things that really matter take place not in the boardrooms, but in the kitchens of the world."
Gary Allen Sledge
Writer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I received this quote as an "Insight for the Day" and it resonated in me. I focus so hard on those things that externally make me 'successful" when true success is found in the deeper things of life, relationships and family.
Speaking of the kitchen--I bought fresh hot Italian sausage for making homemade spaghetti sauce, something that is in my history--the idea of homemade spaghetti sauce with meatballs or sausage brings back such memories--I hadn't thought about it in a long time since I now don't eat pasta often (or Italian food in general)because I am gluten intolerant. Yesterday, unwrapping that waxed brown paper, it just took to back to being a child with my Mom at "Charlie I's" market--back in the day before 7-11 or Circle K, we had those family grocery stores where they ground meat right in front of you and the owner would cut all his own meats--sausage was often made right there---It amazes me how just brown paper surrounding a pound of sausage from the Safeway meat counter brought back that memory--so different then buying it all wrapped in clear plastic and ready to go----
yes, the things that begin in kitchens are those that last--I have no true emotional recall of things that happened or what my parents and grandparents did in terms of monetary issues--it is those things of the heart that truly last long past the grave.
Attitudes
There is a sign up at my J-O-B (just over broke) that says " Attitudes are everything, is yours worth catching?"
I must confess that there was a time in the (too) recent past in which that sign used to really aggravate me especially when deep down I KNEW mine at the moment was lethal. I was angry about and at everything...
Fast forward a few months and many books and introspections later----
I KNOW attitude is everything AND mine is worth catching
I read the following quote today and it is SO true---
"Our attitudes control our lives. Attitudes are a secret power working 24 hours a day for good or bad. It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force." Tom Blandi
When I am positive and set forth a positive mindset, positive things, people, and events are drawn to me----thus creating more positive energy within and around me---it is mostly contagious and really repels those who are negative (unless they have a death wish for you and consider you a challenge to tick off).
Negativity is also contagious, it is also unhealthy for mind, body and spirit....
You know how you feel when the caller ID has a name that you know when they start talking at you, they suck the life out of you and the sunshine goes away----they exhaust you, depress you and then go along their miserable way...
Don't allow that to happen--Now days, if it's a phone call, I let it go to voice mail, if it's a person coming my way, I either make a smooth detour or set my mind to emit as much positive energy ahead of me so either they are changed OR they stay away..
For me, this change started with Vemma and grew as I learned that the business opportunity is steeped in relationships and personal growth ( the attached pay plan is a cool bonus! ) Today, I can't imagine living the life that I was..yes, some days I don't "feel" great all day or when I wake up knowing it's a busy day at the J-O-B BUT I know I have a choice--feelings are real at the moment but I have the POWER to make those feelings different...I always have and always will--attitudes and feelings are all about CHOICE!
Make the CHOICE today to live your life Positive and uplifting---you aren't the only one that will benefit!
Foods Don't supply sufficient Micronutrients--from the research
Abstract from Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. 3(1):51-55, 2006. (www.theissn.org)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The American Dietetic Association (ADA) has stated that the best nutritional strategy for promoting optimal health and reducing the risk of chronic disease is to wisely choose a wide variety of foods. Seventy diets were computer analyzed from the menu of athletes or sedentary subjects seeking to improve the quality of micronutrient intake from food choices. All of these dietary analyses fell short of the recommended 100% RDA micronutrient level from food alone. Therefore, based on diets analyzed for adequacy or inadequacy of macronutrients and micronutrients, a challenging question is proposed: “Does food selection alone provide 100% of the former RDA or newer RDI micronutrient recommended daily requirement?”

Vemma/Verve--THE way to supplement!

Piece on Self Acceptance

"Self-acceptance comes from meeting life's challenges vigorously. Don't numb yourself to your trials and difficulties, nor build mental walls to exclude pain from your life. You will find peace not by trying to escape your problems, but by confronting them courageously. You will find peace not in denial, but in victory."

Use of Calcium in Combination With Vitamin D Supplementation to Prevent Fractures and Bone Loss in People Aged 50 or Older

Just a bit more evidence why supplementation with Vitamins and Minerals is essential for health. VeMMA contains 1000 IU of vitamin D3, found in other studies to decrease risk of colon, prostate and breast cancer, as well as calcium from a plant based mineral(best way to absorb minerals) for reduced fracture risk--Read on!

Excerpt from the commentary in Medscape http://www.medscape.com/viewprogram/8686?src=mp:
The strengths of this meta-analysis include its significant power to detect differences in relatively infrequent clinical events and its control of potential confounding variables. Based on this analysis of available data, physicians should certainly consider supplementation with calcium plus vitamin D among patients (women, in particular) over the age of 50. The minimum dose of calcium which appears effective is 1200 mg daily, and the intervention with calcium alone may be sufficient to reduce the risk for fracture.

However, based on other new evidence, clinicians should strongly consider the addition of at least 800 IU of vitamin D on a daily basis. Vitamin D has been hypothesized to play a role in cell dysplasia and cancer because it can reduce cell proliferation while stimulating apoptosis and cell differentiation. Epidemiologic research supports a possible role of vitamin D in mortality related to cancer. In one study, greater exposure to sunlight was associated with an independent effect in reducing the rate of mortality from ovarian, prostate, breast, and colon cancer.[3]

Colorectal cancer has been particularly scrutinized for its interaction with vitamin D. In an analysis of the Nurses' Health Study, researchers found an inverse linear relationship between plasma levels of 25(OH)D and the risk for incident colorectal cancer.[4] Comparing women in the highest quintile for 25(OH)D vs the lowest quintile, the odds ratio for the development of colorectal cancer was 0.53. Higher levels of vitamin D were particularly effective in preventing colorectal cancer among women at age 60 or older.

A new study of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey reinforces the relationship between 25(OH)D levels and colorectal cancer mortality.[5] The authors followed 16,818 participants and found that 25(OH)D levels of 80 nmol/L or more were associated with an 18% reduction in the risk for mortality from colorectal cancer compared with levels of less than 50 nmol/L. Higher levels of 25(OH)D failed to reduce the rates of mortality related to other forms of cancer.)

The improvement in colorectal cancer outcomes associated with higher serum markers of vitamin D levels is most clinically meaningful if a simple intervention such as vitamin D supplementation can be demonstrated to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer or its resultant complications.

If you want to be wealthy, you must understand what wealth is. Here is the best definition of wealth you will ever find. Wealth is "Cash flow from other sources."

Make Your Money Work For You
What this means is that, you are not wealthy just because you earn a lot of money. You are only wealthy when your money works for you. To become wealthy, your main job is to acquire money and then put it to work making more money for you.

Add Value Continually
The key to creating wealth is simple. It is called "adding value." Successful people are those who are always looking for ways to add value in some way to a person, a company, a product or a service.

Do It Faster
Here is an example of adding value: Domino's Pizza. The founders of Domino's Pizza took a common food, offered by thousands of little restaurants and added a value to the pizza by delivering it more rapidly than anyone else. The added value of speed enabled Domino's to create a billion dollar empire and made the founder of Domino's, Tom Monahan, one of the richest men in the world.

Buy It Cheaper Somewhere Else
Another way to add value is to buy something in one place at one price and then make it available in another place for another price. For example, buying a product or service manufactured in Europe or Asia, importing it to the United States and making it available to people to whom it was not available before, is a way of adding value for which you can charge a higher price.
Improve the Life or Work of Others
All manufacturing and marketing is based on this principle of added value. All importation and distribution aims to add value. Performing a service that enhances the life or work of another person adds value. A dentist who takes away pain is adding value. An accountant who saves a client money on taxes is adding or actually creating value. A salesperson who introduces a new product or service to a customer that helps that customer in some way is adding value. All financial success, especially business success, is based on adding value. It is based on the old saying, "Find a need and fill it."

Combine and Recombine the Elements of Value
All successful business is based on someone bringing together the factors of production, such as labor, capital, raw materials and management, and creating a product or service that a customer will pay a price for that is in excess of the cost of producing it.

How All Fortunes Are Made
Adding value is the way that all fortunes are made. Whenever you see an opportunity to give people what they want at a price greater than it costs you to produce that product or service, you see an opportunity to make a profit, build a business and begin moving toward financial success. Almost any business or occupation can make you financially independent if you can find a way to add enough value.

Action Exercises
Now, here are two actions you can take immediately to add more value to your time and activities:

First, take the time to be absolutely clear about what it is that people want and need to improve their lives and work. The more clear you are about their real needs, the easier it is for you to satisfy them at a higher level.

Second, look for ways to add value to what you are doing every day in every way. Never be satisfied with the status quo. One small idea to add value can be the starting point of a great fortune.

Three Questions for Lifelong Happiness

Three Questions for Lifelong Happiness
By: Brian Tracy

You already have everything you need to create a wonderful life for yourself. You know everything you need to know to be your own best friend, a gentle guide, a teacher and a helper to yourself so you can be truly happy and fulfilled.

You can learn how to become your own psychotherapist for life, and how to resolve the difficulties that stand between you and personal joy.

Be Honest With Yourself
The starting point of becoming your own best friend is for you to be perfectly honest with yourself and your relationships. Refuse to practice self-delusion or hope for the best. For example, when something is making you unhappy, for any reason, the situation will tend to get worse rather than better. So avoid the temptation to engage in denial, to pretend that nothing is wrong, to wish and hope and pray that, whatever it is, it will go away and you won't have to do anything. The fact is that it probably will get worse before it gets better and that ultimately you will need to face the situation and do something about it.

Deal With Your Problem at a Higher Level
There's an old saying that you can't solve a problem on the level that you meet it. This means that wrestling with a persistent problem is often fruitless and frustrating. For example, if two people who are in a relationship together are constantly fighting and negotiating and looking for some way to resolve their difficulties, they may be attempting to solve the problem on the wrong level. Dealing with the problem on a higher level, those people would ask the question, "In terms of being happy, is this the right relationship for us in the first place?"

In a study, men who drank 5 or more cups of green tea per day had half the risk of advanced prostate cancer compared with men who sipped less than a cup a day. Another way to keep the prostate healthy: Avoid a diet high in saturated fat and include plenty of fruits and veggies in your diet.
